Overview

Personal project, 2021

After my first job in personal care product design, I wanted to actually build something mechanical from scratch — not just hand off drawings. So I designed an FDM 3D printer in Fusion 360, sourced parts, wired everything up, configured the firmware, and got it printing.

Does it work? Yes. Is the print quality anywhere near a commercial printer? Not even close. But that wasn’t really the point — I learned more about tolerances, assembly debugging, and “why does this keep jamming” than any textbook could teach. It also turned out to be surprisingly useful later when COVID hit and I needed to prototype parts for my MSc thesis from home.

This project is what shifted my interest from pure product design toward building systems. Everything after this happened because of this printer.
